Artist's statement

My passion for photography began in the early 90's. Traveling throughout North America , I came to appreciate the magnificent beauty and diversity of its natural landscapes. Photography, for me, has been a means to capture special moments in time when light and subject come together and evoke an emotion.

I have learned tha t g ood photography is not only the result of technical mastery, but more importantly, the product of intuition and imagination. My images are eclectic. They are real and abstract; vivid and dreamlike; soft and stark. My subjects range from flowers close up to the majesty of canyons.

My audience has frequently compared my work to watercolor paintings, though they are created traditionally on film. Currently I work with Hasselblad equipment and mainly shoot 120mm slide film, though some images are captured on negatives. I find the square format both provocative and challenging to work with yet lends itself to dramatic compositions. Where as the human mind more often “sees” in rectangles, a square image focuses the viewer's attention by confining the space.

I enjoy using slides because of the way they capture the three-dimensional quality of light. For enlargements I work closely with a local commercial lab where slides are scanned in and digitally output to photographic paper ensuring that the enlargements are made to match the original slide. Throughout the process, care is taken to ensure the final print, a fine arts color photograph, will last long into the future to be enjoyed time and again.

All images are available for purchase, framed on unframed. For pricing and delivery options contact me directly. I can also arrange viewing of images in Toronto by appointment.
